The Reed Raiders opened the Northern 4A football playoffs in fine fashion Friday night. Reed scored the first 34 points of its postseason opener and cruised to a 48-16 regional quarterfinal triumph at home over cross-town rival Spanish Springs.

It’s rare in organized football for teams to play back-to-back games against each other. However, that is indeed the case this week as Reed and Spanish Springs face off in the first round of the Northern 4A regional playoffs — after meeting on the gridiron in both schools’ regular season finale just seven days ago.
Ten days ago, not many who follow northern Nevada prep volleyball would have picked Reed to win a regional title. Perennial Northern 4A powers Reno and Manogue would have been much safer picks. Even league runners-up Galena and Spanish Springs looked like they had the potential to maybe get hot for a few days and win the needed three straight playoff victories to hoist a regional banner.
Northern schools shine at state cross country meet
The Nevada State Cross Country Championships at Rancho San Rafael Park Saturday turned into a highlight for schools from the North, with the Carson girls winning the state title with 67 team points and the Galena taking the boys’ state crown with a meet low 43 points.
