Reed staying the course, despite tough losses
To open its football season, the defending Nevada Northern Division-I champions from Reed High School put together a demanding schedule meriting the Raiders title credentials. Back-to-back treks to James Logan High and Foothill High, both perennial California prep powers, started the gauntlet off and left the Raiders with defeats of 40-24 and 50-33. Despite the losses, Reed coach Ernie Howren said he would do it all over again given the chance.

Reed, Sparks football handled on the road
Reed made another trek into the Golden State for the second straight week, but once again last year’s Nevada state runner-up was saddled with a humbling defeat. Foothill, of suburban Redding, powered its way to a 27-6 halftime lead and cruised to a 50-33 win Friday night.

RENO — A night after clinching a postseason berth, the Reno Aces won the Pacific North Division outright Friday night with a 7-2 victory over the Tucson Padres in the series opener at Aces Ballpark.

HDL golf tees off at WildCreek
The Spanish Springs girls golf team passed their first league test with flying colors. The Cougars won the first High Desert League girls golf tournament of the fall season, posting a team total of 339 to edge out McQueen Tuesday at WildCreek Golf Course.

The Spanish Springs boys soccer team kicked off its season with a crossover league match against Douglas and while the first half saw both sides trade chance after chance, the Cougars eventually took the upper hand en route to a 3-1 victory on Wednesday.
Cougars, Raiders prevail in debuts
It was a typical first game for the Spanish Springs and Douglas girls soccer teams Tuesday night. With many new faces on a very young Tigers squad, filled largely by nine sophomores and four freshmen, both teams spent the first half feeling each other at a methodical pace.
