Run of bad luck continues for North girls basketball
RENO — Another Nevada 4A basketball season came and went and another southern Nevada girls program took home a state title. Bishop Gorman rolled to an 82-59 victory over Reed in Friday’s state championship marking the ninth straight year the championship banner will not hang in a northern Nevada school.

The Reed girls basketball team knew it would have an edge in size for Thursday’s state semifinal matchup with Sunrise Region champion Liberty. It was just a matter of taking advantage of it.
Reno girls collapse against Gorman
RENO — The Reno girls basketball team picked a bad night to play one of their worst games of the winter tournament. Reno, the three-time defending Northern 4A champion struggled offensively throughout Thursday’s state semifinal matchup against Bishop Gorman and was saddled with a 61-40 loss at Lawlor Events Center.
Manogue, McQueen boys fall to southern Nevada foes
RENO — Nevada's two 4A private Catholic schools saw their boys hoops teams battle Thursday night for the right to play for a state title. Unfortunately for Bishop Mangoue, it was not the Miners turn this year, and the Reno school fell to Bishop Gorman, 65-52 in a state semifinal at Lawlor Events Center.
Sparks boys get familiar foe in 3A state semis
Tonight will mark the beginning of the end in the Sparks Railroaders quest for a 3A state boys basketball title. Sparks, which won the 3A Northern Region championship last weekend, will take on Yerington at Damonte Ranch High School in a 3A state semifinal. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.

When the 4A state tournament rolls around every February, few prep hoop fans in the Silver State give northern Nevada schools much of a chance against their Las Vegas-area foes. Sometimes it’s for good reason and other times its just because of the South’s traditional dominance.

This is not your ordinary Sunrise Region girls basketball champion. For the past decade, the Sunrise Region champ was considered an also-ran next to the likes of Las Vegas-area and state powerhouses Centennial and Bishop Gorman, both Sunset Region schools.
Reno girls down Reed, win North
The Reed girls basketball team’s dreams of a Northern 4A title were dashed once again by the Reno Huskies. For the third straight year, Reno downed Reed in the championship game of the Northern 4A Tournament. On Saturday, Reno pulled away in the second half en route to capturing a 55-33 triumph at Spanish Springs High School.

WINNEMUCCA — The Sparks boys basketball team already knew it was bound for the upcoming state tournament, but the Railroaders did not know if they would be going as the 3A North's No. 1 seed or a No. 2 seed.
Local wrestlers fall at state
The Northern 4A champion Spanish Springs wrestling team had a tough go of it over the weekend at the state championship meet. None of the six SSHS wrestlers who qualified for state reached the finals and the Cougars managed just 9.5 team points, good for 21st overall.

With the score tied at the end of the first and second quarters, something had to give in the second half in Friday's 4A Northern Region semifinal between Reed and Galena to decide which team would earn the North’s second automatic bid to state.
Reno girls outlast Manogue
Not many outside the Green and Gold faithful of Bishop Manogue gave the Miners a fighting chance in Friday night’s Northern 4A girls basketball playoff. However, Bishop Manogue gave two-time defending Northern 4A champion Reno all it could handle before succumbing late, 46-39, in a regional tournament semifinal at Spanish Springs High School.
