It was the Austin Rauh Show Friday night at Galena High School. The Spanish Springs senior did just about everything but drive the Cougars' bus and cook the pregame meal in leading his SSHS football team to a 34-21 triumph in Northern 4A league prep football action.

It’s shaping up to be a fun fall for Rail City prep football teams. Sparks and Spanish Springs are both 2-0 on the young season and Reed, a traditional Northern 4A power picked up a win last week after dropping its season debut to a tough California foe.

The Sparks High Railroaders were swept in a non-league home volleyball match by Portola, Calif Wednesday. Despite the defeat, third-year coach Tarina Elliott said things are looking up for her young squad.

RENO — A week ago Spanish Springs won in spite of its defense getting torched for 44 points. On Friday night, the SSHS gridders won because their defense played shutdown football and forced three second-half Hug turnovers to post a 22-7 home win in Northern 4A prep football action.

Local football programs gear up for Week 2 tilts
Nevada's high school football season kicked off last week and all three Rail City schools got their feet wet in season openers. While the local program had different results, all three coaches saw reason for optimism and areas that need sharper execution.
Cougars win first HDL tournament
The High Desert League girls golf season could not have started much better for the Spanish Springs Cougars. The SSHS squad posted a 348 team total to easily win the HDL’s first tournament of the fall season.
