Octanefest roars at Fallon
The third annual Octanefest stormed into Fallon this weekend bringing a variety of events that appealed to almost any motorsport fan. And two of the highlights were Lucas Oil National at Top Gun Raceway as well as the Superlites Invitational at the Churchill County Fairgrounds.

The 2009-2010 school year just concluded, but the work of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association, the state’s governing body for high school sports, is never done. The NIAA will hold its quarterly Board of Control June 16-17 at the Holiday Inn in Sparks and a few items on the agenda have local ramifications.

A pair of fleet-footed Spanish Springs Cougars signed their national letters of intent Tuesday. Sullivan Stevens and Justus Mora made their collegiate plans official at the local school by announcing their intentions to compete beyond their prep careers.
Rally cars return to desert
After an absence of two years the North Nevada Rally returned to the dirt roads of our area. Unlike an oval track race, the cars and motorcycles race against the clock over several stages.
Girls Team of the Year: Cougar Dynasty
Winning always makes sports more fun. But looking at the personalities on the Spanish Springs softball team, it’s probably safe to say, even if the Cougars weren’t dominating their way to a 33-1 record, they would still be having a blast.

Male Athlete of the Year: Sparks senior racked up accolades
Bryan Orellana is a confident kid, but in retrospect, even he had to be a bit surprised about his successes over the past year. The Sparks High senior’s star shone brightly in all three sports seasons this past school year and that’s why he’s been named the Sparks Tribune’s male Athlete of the Year.
Sears scores first mod win at Rattlesnake
Much warmer temperatures greeted both racers and fans Saturday at Rattlesnake Raceway. Due to the holiday weekend fewer cars were on hand but the racing was no less intense and one local driver claimed his first modified victory.
HDL's postseason awards released
The Spanish Springs baseball team racked up a 26-8 record this season, posted a school-record 19-game winning streak and finished second in the High Desert League standings behind perennial Northern 4A power Reno.
