With four games on the slate for the opening day of the Rail City Classic at Sparks High, Maroon and Gold fans had to wait until the very end of the day to watch what they wanted to see.
Reed wins conference-opening dual at Reno
The Reed High wrestling team felt some mixed emotions Thursday night. Reed picked up a 48-30 win at Reno in its High Desert League dual meet opener. Unfortunately for the RHS squad, later in the night, it got embarrassed in a non-league dual, falling to state power Green Valley, 64-18.
Cougars win winter dual debut
The Spanish Springs wrestling team has proven itself as the team to beat in the Northern 4A and High Desert League. Three straight regional titles back that up.
Rail City Rivalry Round 1
Reed and Spanish Springs haven’t faced a High Desert League opponent yet this season in prep basketball action, but both schools will tonight.
Spanish Springs spanked
For the first time in school history, the Spanish Springs girls basketball team started a season with five straight wins. However, the Cougars probably knew they could be in for a long night in their attempt to begin the season 6-0 after watching Pleasant Grove score the first eight points of Friday night’s game in less than two minutes.
Local wrestlers ready to rumble
Losing only three members from a squad that took home the Northern 4A crown last year, the Spanish Springs wrestling team knows there is a target on its back, as teams gun for its thrown. The Cougars aren’t worrying about that though, instead staying focused on winning more than just their fourth straight regional title.
Cougar girls too much for Elko
For one half the Spanish Springs girls basketball team struggled mightily, letting Elko hang in the game. However, a huge third quarter cured all of the Cougars’ ills and they cruised to a 52-42 win Thursday evening in first day action of the fifth annual High Sierra Winter Challenge. The victory improved Spanish Springs to 5-0 on the season, the best start in program history.
Spanish Springs boys hold off Elko
Another big scoring night from senior swingman Brandon Delong propelled Spanish Springs to its fourth win in five tries. Delong poured in a game-high 28 points as Spanish Springs overcame a slow start to capture a 60-51 win Thursday over host Elko at the annual EHS Red Lion Tournament.
Reed highlights awards parade
The Reed High football team dominated regional foes all season. The Raiders did not lose to a Northern 4A opponent all season and even cruised to a 49-0 win over Carson in the North title game. Given its manhandling of regional competition, it’s no surprise Reed got plenty of recognition when the conference’s all-league awards were released this week.
Miners outlast Cougars
A four-minute second-quarter drought proved costly for the Spanish Springs boys basketball team. In the end, it likely cost the Cougars a victory as they were saddled with a 65-58 home loss to Bishop Manogue in a Northern 4A crossover league game.
Sparks falls short against Portola
Still searching for its first win of the season, the Sparks girls basketball team lost by four points for the third straight game, this time falling 43-39 to the visiting Tigers from Portola, Calif. Tuesday evening.
