Commentary: Odds and Ends from the 2012-13 school year
Since moving to northern Nevada and starting to cover high school sports in December of 1996, I've seen a few school years roll on by, 17 to be specific. It's crazy to think that the recently graduated seniors were newborns when I started covering prep sports in the Truckee Meadows.
Local prep programs hosting youth summer camps
A new Washoe County School District calendar has shortened the summer for students across the district. So this summer of 2013 may be shorter than normal, but it will still offer plenty of opportunities for local youths, especially in the Rail City, to hone their skills in a variety of sports.
Thompson and McKinney top NNKC
Great weather this weekend set the stage for a rare Northern Nevada Kart Club race on Saturday at Desert Park Raceway. A couple of classes had close finishes for their mains while the next generation of racers were busy earning their racing spurs.
Local senior hoopsters take part in All-Star game
When the Spanish Springs High girls basketball team saw its season come to an end in the semi-finals to Reno, senior guard Riley Holladay thought it would be the last time she wore the Purple and Silver. Fortunately for Holladay and a handful of others representing the Rail City, the 2013 Local Sports Program Senior All-Star Game offered one last shot to don their prep uniforms.

In the Division I Volleyball State semifinal match last November, Spanish Springs sat just one set victory away from a berth into the state championship. Suddenly though SSHS watched its two-set cushion disappear. Then in the fifth and decisive game, the Cougars found themselves down in a race to 15.
