SSHS names new girls hoops coach
When former Spanish Springs girls basketball coach Christine Eckles stepped down at the end of the season in February, it signaled an end to the only era the Cougars had known. Since SSHS opened it doors in 2001, Eckles had been at the helm of the Cougars’ program. Now Spanish Springs begins a new era under a familiar face from the school’s boys basketball team.
Aces ready for return to Reno
Friday's Opening Night will pit the Reno Aces against the Sacramento River Cats. Whitney Myer, Reno native and contestant on NBC’s “The Voice,” will perform the National Anthem, and Wolf Pack Football Coach Brian Polian will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. The club’s 2012 Triple-A National Championship and Pacific Coast League Championship banners will be on display for the first time.
Nevada's Burton to return for senior season
RENO — University of Nevada junior point guard Deonte Burton had Wolf Pack basketball fans on pins and needles. Since the team's season ended in the Mountain West Conference Tournament last month, there has been much anticipation over the athletic guard's playing future.
Rattlesnake Raceway opens season
It was a wild night at Rattlesnake Raceway's season opener on Saturday. A cool wind kept things a bit on the chilly side while on the track there was hot racing and a time out period while NV Energy fixed a power problem.
Sparks softball splits with Whittell
Saturday was a roller-coaster ride for the Sparks softball team. After dropping a 5-4 contest in extra innings in the twin bill opener, the Railroaders responded with a 19-11 victory over Whittell to salvage a Mount Rose League split.

Taking the field at Aces Ballpark, the Reed High baseball looked to complete a sweep of Division I North foe Carson. Unfortunately for the Blue and Gold, it was unable to break out the brooms as it dropped the contest 7-2 Friday evening.
Reed's Sertic pitches perfect game at Wooster
After Reed starting pitcher Jackie Sertic sat the final Wooster batter down swinging to end Thursday afternoon’s Division I North game, the junior ace jogged to the Raider dugout with a smile extended across her face as she greeted her teammates. This smile was a little wider than normal though.
