Sparks Parks and Rec. offers summer youth programming
Washoe County schools are set to open the new school year on Aug. 12. That shortens the summer up by a few weeks for local kids, but it has not cut back on summer programming offered by the Sparks Parks and Recreation Department. Parks and Rec. staff began planning in January for programming opportunities this summer. It's activity guide was mailed to homes in March and is available on-line.
Dash for Dads promotes prostate cancer awareness
A year ago, Dash for Dads became a reality in the Truckee Meadows. Now, for some, it may be becoming a necessity. Dash for Dads, a running event aimed at promoting prostate cancer awareness, will take place Sunday morning at the Sparks Marina.
Speed, color and burning rubber at Octane Fest
Octane Fest rolled into Fallon for its annual three-day visit of horsepower, color and speed. A car show, Outlaw Kart racing, Monster Trucks, Freestyle Motocross and the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series were all part of the show.
Commentary: Odds and Ends from the 2012-13 school year
Since moving to northern Nevada and starting to cover high school sports in December of 1996, I've seen a few school years roll on by, 17 to be specific. It's crazy to think that the recently graduated seniors were newborns when I started covering prep sports in the Truckee Meadows.
Local prep programs hosting youth summer camps
A new Washoe County School District calendar has shortened the summer for students across the district. So this summer of 2013 may be shorter than normal, but it will still offer plenty of opportunities for local youths, especially in the Rail City, to hone their skills in a variety of sports.
