Winds traveling at the speed of a highway car whipped through northern Nevada on Tuesday, sweeping in a cold front and wreaking havoc on a few power lines.

Residents in Spanish Springs, near Eagle Canyon Drive, along with communities near Pyramid Lake were left without power Tuesday afternoon, according to representatives from NV Energy.

The company received 25 calls from residents near Eagle Canyon and 16 calls from locals in Sutcliffe. By 3:50 p.m. the homes in Sutcliffe had power restored and the homes in Spanish Springs were still waiting.

The gusts hit speeds of 52 mph at the Reno Tahoe International Airport in the afternoon. However, representatives from the National Weather Service said winds could have been higher in other areas.

Winds in the Galena area climbed as high as 66 mph and gusts at the mountains topped 80 mph.

A high wind advisory was issued until 8 p.m. After that time, meteorologists expected the winds to die down and make way for a cold snap.

Today’s high temperatures are expected to be in the 60s with a 10 percent chance of precipitation.

The gusts also kicked up enough dust to close Interstate 80 westbound 20 miles east of Fernley and U.S. 395 near Bordertown.

“You really have to see it to believe it,” Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Chuck Allen said of the I-80 dust.

The storm reduced visibility to nearly nothing on the westbound lanes of the interstate, but the eastbound lanes remained clear.

The roads were closed because of traffic accidents, but reopened later Tuesday afternoon.

The westbound lanes of I-80 were reopened at 3:14 p.m. and U.S. 395 near Bordertown was reopened at 2 p.m.

An accident on I-80 happened when an 18-wheeled truck was traveling westbound in the right lane near mile marker 67 when the driver reduced his speed and activated his emergency four-way flashers due to poor visibility. A second 18-wheeler came up behind the truck and, due to poor visibility, rear-ended it. The lead truck and trailer traveled into the center median while the second truck went toward the right paved shoulder. Neither driver was injured.

Shortly thereafter, a third commercial truck traveled through the accident scene and drove over debris, damaging the truck. Troopers believe the engine oil pan was punctured.
