RENO — The Washoe County School District’s board of trustees is currently involved in the redistricting process and will be gathering public public input during the next two weeks.

This is the process by which the boundaries of elective districts are periodically redrawn to maintain equal representation based on population. The redistricting process, which is required by state law, determines the geographical area that each board member represents as an elected official.

The process began earlier this year.

“The map proposals have been presented to the board of trustees on two different occasions during the month of August,” said Randy Drake, chief general counsel for the WCSD and the person in charge of redistricting. “The trustees directed our staff to get as much community and stakeholder input as possible before bringing back the final recommendations to the board in November.”

A community-wide survey will be launched this week and the district will hold five town hall meetings during the next two weeks. This will allow all interested persons an opportunity to view the map proposals being discussed by the board and provide input on the proposals and process.

The survey will be available at the beginning of the week and can be accessed online at www.washoecountyschools.org/trustees/redistricting.

The five town hall meetings will begin on today and run through Oct. 27 at the following school locations:

Today: 6 p.m. at O’Brien Middle School in the library

Wednesday: 6 p.m. at Mendive Middle School in the library

Saturday: 10 a.m. at Vaughn Middle School in the library

Oct. 24: 6 p.m. at Swope Middle School in the library

Oct. 27: 6 p.m. at Billinghurst Middle School in the library
