The $1.75 million grant announced Monday for North Las Vegas comes from the Community Oriented Policing Services office of the Justice Department.
While police Sgt. Tim Bedwell says the department is excited about the money, accepting COPS Hiring Program money may require the city to contribute more than $3 million in matching funds.
Bedwell and city spokeswoman Juliet Casey say that’ll be up to the City Council.
The council recently authorized the city manager to declare a state of emergency and suspend municipal contracts due to financial woes in a city with widespread unemployment, foreclosures and bankruptcies.
