SPARKS — Sparks police are in the early stages of investigating a shooting that took place at McCarran and Nichols boulevards at 7:25 a.m. on Tuesday. Authorities received multiple calls of a male who was shot in the crosswalk at McCarran at Nichols Boulevards. The victim, Earl Preston, was crossing McCarran Boulevard on foot, when a man standing on the southwest corner drew a large caliber handgun and shot Preston once in the lower abdomen. The suspect, Riccardo Thornton, remained calmly on the curb until police arrived.

Once on scene, several witnesses pointed out Thornton as the suspect and he was taken into custody. Thornton was arrested and booked for one count of battery with a deadly weapon causing substantial bodily harm. The suspects' weapon, a Smith & Wesson .44 magnum revolver with a scope, was recovered as evidence.

Preston was taken into surgery for a single gunshot wound to his lower back that exited through his abdomen. The bullet struck his liver, kidney and colon causing enough damage to his colon that it had to be removed. Preston is in recovery and currently is in critical but stable condition.
