For the third weekend, the Sparks boys soccer team traveled out of town to play a set of three games against Humboldt League competition.

Railroaders boys soccer coach Frank Avilla said the two games in a day makes for a long outing and fatigue was setting in during his team's second game Friday.

Still, Sparks remained undefeated on the season with a 9-1 win over Fernley and a 3-1 victory over Fallon.

In the first game at Fernley, Hector Hernandez scored four goals in a row and led the Maroon and Gold to the lopsided victory.

Vicente Cervantes scored back-to-back goals in the second and 33rd minutes, and then Hernandez went to work, adding goals in the 35th and 36th minutes for a 4-0 Sparks lead at the break.

Hernandez opened the second half with two goals.

“Hector just was on fire. It took awhile to figure things out, and then Hector took it upon himself to be the leader he is. He’s our captain out there,” Avilla said. “He’s just a good all-around player and a good kid. He was in the right place at the right time. He’s a joy to coach and a joy to watch play.”

Jose Rijos and Kevin Partida capped the scoring with goals in the final 10 minutes.

Partida had two assists. Oscar Gomez, Rijos, Juan A. Hernandez and Jose Mendoza all added an assist.

After playing early Friday morning, Sparks had to come back and face Fallon in the afternoon.

With the win, Sparks improved to 15-0 overall and 7-0 in league.

But it wasn’t easy.

Partida found the back of the net in the 11th minute on an assist by Hector Hernandez.

For 61 minutes, neither team scored until the Greenwave found the equalizer in the 72nd minute. Then Hector Hernandez took it upon himself to earn Sparks the triumph with an unassisted marker in the 74th minute.

Rijos added an insurance goal in stoppage time. Cervantes assisted on the play.

Sparks plays Dayton in Fernley today at 8 a.m.
