The Sparks High boys basketball team got off a strong start and picked up a key 3A Mount Rose League win at North Tahoe, dropping the Lakers 74-60 Tuesday night.

Sparks ran out to a 20-9 lead after one quarter and did not let go of the momentum. The Railroaders had extended their edge to 36-19 by halftime. The SHS crew did not let up, outscoring its hosts 21-18 in the third period for a 57-37 advantage with a period to go.

North Tahoe did outscore Sparks 23-17 in the fourth quarter while Sparks coaches substituted liberally with a large lead.

Xavier Rodriguez led all scorers, throwing in 24 points for Sparks. Martin Jordan chipped in 12 for the Railroaders.

"We executed really well," Sparks coach Mike Jones said. "We didn't shoot it real well, but we had been taking too many threes. We didn't shoot as many tonight. We've been looking to get better looks at twos and tonight we did that."

Matt Walter, Brett Roberts and Trevor Trimin scored 16, 14 and 13 points respectively for North Tahoe in defeat.

Sparks wraps up its regular season Thursday with a road game at Whittell. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The Railroaders will clinch the Mount Rose League's top postseason seed and a first-round regional playoff game with a win at Whittell.
