The Spanish Springs Cougars continued a stellar start to their fall campaign Tuesday evening. The SSHS club improved to 6-1-1 on the season by downing Damonte Ranch 3-1 at home in a girls prep soccer crossover league affair.

Sam Ryckebosch was a big part of the Cougars' offense Tuesday. She gave Spanish Springs a 2-0 lead with goals just before and after halftime. Ryckebosch scored in the 37th minute thanks to an assist from Alyssa Bertuleit. Then in the 46th minute, Ryckebosch tallied her second score after finding the back of the net when Audrey Barham contributed an assist.

"The first half was a little rough," Spanish Springs coach Mike Faker said. "They put a lot of pressure on us. They outplayed us in the first half. In the second half, we turned it around. I liked what I saw in the second half.

"When we got into halftime with the lead, I felt pretty good because they'd had a good attack. It looked like they were dribbling outside and then into the middle, looping a player around. It was confusing us."

Neither team scored over the next 26 minutes. Barham got in the scoring mix when she buried a goal in the Mustangs' net at the 72-minute mark. Taylor Kern gave away the assist on the third Spanish Springs score.

"We've had a hard time scoring so getting three goals is nice," Faker said. "That may open it up for us. Sam (Ryckebosch) had been struggling to finish and she got two goals today. Hopefully, that will help her confidence."

Spanish Springs peppered the Damonte goal with 18 shots. Damonte got off 14 shots on the SSHS goal. Cougars goalkeeper Caitlyn Silva finished with 10 saves. She nearly finished with a shutout but Damonte (3-5) ruined the Cougar keeper's scoreless bid in the 78th minute.

Mustangs freshman forward Kendall Etchegoyhen took a tough-angled shot from the right side of the Cougars' goal. It hit the far post and ricocheted into the Spanish Springs net for Damonte's lone goal.

"I thought we squandered some opportunities in the first half," Damonte coach Sean Canty said. "We gifted them that second goal but Spanish Springs is solid. They are well organized. It was good game. We are pretty evenly matched on both sides."

Spanish Springs returns to the soccer pitch Friday for a 5:30 p.m. match on the road against rival Reed.
