One year after falling in the North Region title game and missing out on the state tournament, the Cougars are moving on.

Spanish Springs topped Carson, 1-0, Thursday at Damonte Ranch in the North Region semifinals, securing a state tournament berth. Carson hosts next weekend’s state tournament so the top two teams from the region advance to state.

Spanish Springs (17-0-2) plays Wooster (Sierra League champion) Saturday in the North Region title game.

“Oh it’s huge,” Spanish Springs coach Rob Moreland said of Thursday’s semifinal win.

Gabby Vasquez scored the lone goal of the match in the 65th minute, taking advantage of a pass from Ricardo Camacho and drilling it into the top corner from 20 yards out.

Carson had a chance to tie the game 10 minutes later but sent a shot, with an open net, over the crossbar.

“That was their chance but it’s better to be lucky than good,” Moreland said.

Thursday’s game was played among steady, strong wind gusts. Moreland said the wind undoubtedly affected the game.

“Oh yeah it (wind) always does (affect us),” Moreland said. “It makes us play differently. Your through balls go too far and they go out of bounds. You have to be careful.”

With a state berth locked, Moreland believes his team will play relaxed in the title game and is not concerned his team will lack motivation, citing last season’s loss in the Regional Title game.

First kick between the Cougars and Colts is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Bishop Manogue.

Said Moreland: “We’re ready. The kids are ready to fight. Let’s do it.”
