The second and third quarters doomed Spanish Springs Thursday night in its tournament opener against Elko.

The host Indians held the Cougars to 15 points in the middle 16 minutes of action while scoring 33 of their own en route to a 67-52 victory at the eighth annual Red Lion Tourney.

Elko’s Brandon Jenkins dropped in a 3-pointer to start the scoring as the Indians took an early 4-0 lead. It was all Spanish Springs for the remainder of the first quarter.

After the Indians went up 7-2, the Cougars outscored their opponent 15-3 in order to grab a 17-10 lead after one quarter. However, that was the high point of the evening for the Purple and Silver.

Elko returned the favor in the second quarter, outscoring the visiting team 18-8 for a 28-25 halftime lead.

The Indians continued that momentum in the second half. Back-to-back buckets by Tim Meo and Tubby Rasch extended the gap to double digits for the first time, 40-29. Elko led 43-32 heading into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter was the highest scoring quarter of the night as the two teams combined for 44 points over the final eight minutes.

A Connor Naisbitt 3-pointer and Austin Damoth basket cut the deficit to 45-37 early in the fourth. That would be the last time Elko’s edge was single digits.

Spanish Springs (2-2) takes on Spring Creek tonight at 5 p.m.
