On the second day of the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic, the Spanish Springs boys basketball team ran into a stifling defense that exacerbated the Cougars’ lack of offensive execution.

The result was a 66-36 loss to Brea Olinda.

“We were just out of sync across the board against a very good defensive team,” SSHS boys basketball coach Kyle Penney said. “The game is a great learning experience for us. We can learn from our play and we can certainly learn from our opponent. This loss should ground us and get us back to being tough, disciplined and a unit of one as we work to get better for the home stretch of league games.”

Spanish Springs had won seven in a row before Thursday night’s lopsided loss.

TJ McCauley was the lone Cougar in double figures as he tallied 11. No other Cougar had more than six points as the team turned the ball over 30 times and shot 37 percent from the floor.

Spanish Springs (9-3) is back in action today at 2:15 p.m. against Bishop’s of La Jolla, Calif.
