RENO — Construction of the $16 million project to improve South McCarran Boulevard from Virginia Street to Mira Loma Drive continues will progress this week, forcing road closures and slowdowns, the Regional Transportation Commission said Tuesday.

Granite Construction Company will be paving the inside lanes on South McCarran between

Thursday and Saturday. The work will cover two signaled intersections. On Thursday, the South McCarran Boulevard and Rio Poco Road intersection will be closed to cross traffic and

left turns between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes or follow the

detour to make a U-turn at Longley Lane or Mira Loma Drive, as needed.

On Friday, August 3, Granite will pave between Rio Poco Road and Mira Loma Drive. Both intersections will be open to all traffic movements except for these traffic controls.

On Saturday, the South McCarran Boulevard and Mira Loma Drive intersection will be

closed to cross traffic and left turns between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Motorists are advised to use

alternate routes or follow the detour to U-turn at Rio Poco Road or at Rock Boulevard/Pembroke Drive, as needed.

During the week of Hot August Nights, beginning Tuesday, road construction will shut down and only minor work that will result in no traffic impact may occur. The roadway work will resume on Monday, August 13, with traffic switched over to the newly paved lanes and the work zone shifts to the outside lanes.

The project is scheduled to complete by early October 2012.
