RENO — The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is suspending the search and recovery effort of the missing hiker, Rick Gentry, who reported himself lost on AT 5:24 p.m. Nov. 21.

The current search and recovery operation resumed at 6 a.m. Sunday and continued through Thursday. The sheriff’s office incident commander reported that the probability of detection remains low because of rugged terrain and the unsafe nature of the search areas. Therefore, the search and recovery efforts for Gentry has been suspended.

A helicopter will continue to fly regular search patterns in the areas of Galena Creek, Thomas Creek and Whites Creek as part of its routine duties, weather permitting. The sheriff’s office is planning on another search effort upon more favorable weather conditions.

The sheriff’s office recommends that the public avoid the above-mentioned trails if at all possible during inclement weather. Although winter recreational activities are extremely popular in the region, authorities advise people to dress accordingly, research the weather patterns hourly, fully charge electrical equipment and never be out on a trail just prior to sundown.
