RENO — The Salvation Army’s 2011 Back to School program is trying to assist as many disadvantaged students as possible with supplies and clothing — and the need is outpacing donations. The program was expanded from 250 to 500 kids this year, with school counselors identifying and selecting the students. More than 150 received help in July, with another 350 scheduled for assistance Aug. 25 and 26.

But when the Salvation Army heard 15-20 additional students at Lois Allen Elementary in Sun Valley also needed clothing and supplies — the organization couldn’t say no. A distribution for those children is scheduled from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at The Salvation Army, 1931 Sutro St. in Reno. Each child will receive a gift certificate to a local store to purchase shoes, a new backpack of school supplies, new items of clothing (socks, underwear, etc.), a voucher to our thrift store for additional clothing, child hygiene items and snacks for school.

The Salvation Army has collection barrels at various businesses (Meadowood Mall, CVS Pharmacies, Sam’s Club, Mae Anne and Spanish Springs Walmarts, Moana Nursery, Great Basin Brewery, Adobe Café, PJ & Co. Restaurant, Jack’s Café, Shear Bliss Salon, Tangerine Salon and At the Ritz Salon). The Salvation Army also needs gift certificates for clothing and shoes.

Anyone wishing to donate can call The Salvation Army at 775-688-4555, ext. 200 or mail a check payable to The Salvation Army, with “Back to School” on the memo line.
