The day shift supervisor at a Sparks school bus yard is facing an investigation by Washoe County School District Police after co-workers leveled allegations of criminal embezzlement.
School District Police Chief Mike Mieras would not put a dollar amount on the embezzlement case, but sources in district accounting put the figure in the thousands.
“When you get into embezzlement cases, they can take months,” Meiras said, explaining that each allegation needed to be scrutinized carefully.
No charges have been pressed against yard supervisor Kenneth Theiss, however school district spokesman Steve Mulvenon confirmed that Theiss is on administrative leave.
“It doesn’t matter how much or how little money we are talking about, we will investigate it,” Mulvenon said.
And while Mieras said that the investigation is ongoing, which seals off much of the information, he did say that some of the embezzlement allegations turned out to be legitimate bus yard expenses.
A recently retired bus yard mechanic, Linda Van Orman, took the allegations to police, claiming that her supervisor had used bus yard funds to pay for personal car repairs and taken school district property for his own personal use. Allegations also claim that Theiss asked employees to do repairs on his personal equipment on the school district’s time.
Two other office employees corroborated Van Orman’s reports, but both declined to release their names.
School district police had pulled aside many of the bus yard’s employees for questioning in early June.
Theiss had his due-process hearing Wednesday, according to Mieras, but no charges are currently pressed against him.
Theiss was not available for comment Wednesday afternoon.
There are still at least 2 employees that are implicated but not yet named in this investigation. I am hopefull the school police will continue to follow up and expose all employees involved.
I happen to know Linda and Melinda very well and I am quite certain the comments regarding Linda filling a harassment suit are just not true even though she has years of documentation and legal grounds. Linda only wants justice and accountability from the district and the employees involved.
By the way, Melinda Thomas is Linda's longtime life partner. Melinda has everything to gain when/if Linda gets her big fat "harassment" settlement. Just laying down the foundation, and Sparks Tribune helped her out! Shame on you and your lack of journalistic ethics.
Is she guilty as well or just smart enough to wait until she retired to be a coward to face the facts!!
