The latest in a long line of Reed High soccer standouts made her college plans official. RHS senior Jessie Eiting signed her national letter of intent to play soccer for Westminster College during a ceremony in the east Sparks school's large gym Thursday afternoon.

Westminster is a private NAIA school located in Salt Lake City.

"I stepped on campus and fell in love with the college," Eiting said in an interview before Thursday's festivities. "I loved the layout of the dorms and the buildings. I loved the way it's a tight, close-knit community. I liked the small class size. I'm excited."

Eiting played three years of varsity soccer for Reed, a perennial Northern 4A powerhouse. She helped Reed win a North State title as a sophomore and then led the Raiders into the postseason in each of the past two seasons.

"She's been great for our program," Reed girls soccer coach Jason Saville said. "We asked her to be more of a vocal leader as a senior and she was. In her previous two years, she was more of a leader with her work ethic. When she shows up, she's all business. Jesse hates to lose. If 100 percent of players had her competitive drive, that's when you win championships."

Eiting was an all-league goalkeeper for Reed as a junior and an all-league midfielder as a senior. She also spent time on defense and at forward during her Raiders tenure.

"Soccer is a thinking game and she is great at that," Saville said. "She could play at a fast pace and she could play anywhere on the field because she understands the game so well. In my seven years as coach, she's the only player who has ever played all four positions."

Eiting does not just excel on the soccer pitch. She is a five-time Nevada state skiing champion. Westminster's proximity to noted ski resorts in the Wasatch Mountains is no small reason why Eiting liked the school. Eiting, who expects to play in goal at Westminster pointed out that the college's summer workouts begin in July and she's anxious to get compete.

"I'm so pumped right now," she said ecstatically. "I've loved my time at Reed. I hope the rest goes fast, but I don't want to be too rushed … I like that Salt Lake is close to skiing. That factored in a lot. I plan to keep racing. Hopefully, with a local club there. There were opportunities to go to school for skiing instead of soccer but I wanted to go to Westminster for school. Soccer and skiing are just a bonus."

Eiting has not settled on a major, but said she's leaning toward studies in Chemistry, Business and English. The Reed honor student is the daughter of Shirle and Matt Eiting
