It’s been a bizarre week for the Reed girls soccer team. The Raiders have had the week off from school but have remained plenty busy. Reed whacked Hug, 5-1, on the road Wednesday night in the Raiders’ third game in as many days.

Reed coach Jason Saville thought his squad started the game slowly but improved as the game went on.

“The girls came out and it took them a while to find a rhythm,” Saville said. “We had some early opportunities and nothing was falling in. Once we found it, it was go time after that. It was just a good team win.”

Samantha King-Shaw got the Raiders on the scoreboard in the 21st minute. Ten minutes later, Vanessa Martinez extended the lead to 2-0 with her first goal of the game. Martinez added her second, and final goal of the match, in the 80th minute when she bent a corner kick into the net.

Kendra Bujnovsky’s 50th-minute goal pushed the lead to 3-0 before Kennady Whithead snuck one past the Hug goalie in the 75th minute.

Whitehead also assisted the King-Shaw and Bujnovsky tallies.

“It will be a travesty if she (Whitehead) doesn’t win Midfielder of the Year,” Saville said. “Her ability to hold not one, but two defenders off and her ability to get off people, you just don’t see that once but every 5-10 years in your program.”

In Wednesday’s rout, and Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Damonte Ranch, Saville was able to give most of his starters rest late in the games to help offset the fatigue of three matches in three days.

But with two wins in two days Saville is hesitant to say his team is gathering momentum.

“I think it’s too early to tell,” Saville said. “They seem to be all moving forward. We just need to stay on the same page and get better everyday. That’s what we’re shooting for.”

Reed hosts McQueen Saturday at 11 a.m.
