Tribune/Debra Reid - Sparks Police Officer Dennis Rodrigue arrests suspected car burglar Alexander Silveira, 21, on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at the corner of Pyramid Way and Prater Way. Undercover Crime Suppression Unit (CSU) detectives observed Silveira and Tye Giles, 21, as they shot out car windows and stole valuables outside the Fitness for 10 gym in Sparks.
Crime Suppression Unit detectives and patrol officers started monitoring the suspects’ activities.
On Wednesday, detectives followed the suspects to the Fitness for 10 gym at 1575 E. Lincoln Way. Detectives watched the suspects scope out the parking lot for more than an hour. The suspects watched each patron closely waiting to see someone leave their purse or other valuables in their vehicle.
After the men found two cars that had valuables left in them, detectives watched the suspects park their vehicle between the two cars. The men waited for the parking lot to be clear of pedestrian traffic before using a BB gun to shoot out the windows of these vehicles, taking such valuables as a purse, wallet, credit cards, cash, cell phone and camera. The suspects then drove directly to a nearby gas station and used one of the stolen credit cards to fuel their vehicle.
Detectives took Tye Giles and Alexander Silveira, both 21 years old and residents of Sparks, into custody. A subsequent search of their vehicle linked the pair to about 20 other vehicle burglaries throughout Reno, Sparks and Carson City.
Detectives searched the men’s home, recovering a stolen Honda Accord, about 20 more purses, laptop computers, car stereos and cameras.
A substantial amount of property has been returned to the rightful owners, however Sparks detectives are still in possession of several items that have not been claimed.
Vehicle burglary victims are asked to contact the Sparks Police Department detective division at 353-2225.
