Northern Nevada residents have a reason to get glamorous and walk the red carpet on Sunday when Sierra Arts hosts its annual Arts and Oscars benefit starting at 4 p.m.

What started as a small gathering of people dressing up to watch the Academy Awards show at home has turned into a fundraiser for the non-profit art organization. Executive director for Sierra Arts Jill Berryman said the event has grown considerably over the 15 years it has been a public event.

From holding the gathering at the Sierra Arts office, to Planet Hollywood, to the Peppermill and now in its second year at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa, Berryman said the event is an excellent excuse to add glitz and glamour to local residents’ lives.

“We’ve encouraged people to feel like they’re on the red carpet,” Berryman said, explaining that attendees can come in their finest attire.

In addition to walking the red carpet at the Atlantis, event attendees will be given a photograph taken on the carpet, complimentary martinis from Wild River Grille, a three-course meal of filet mignon and salmon with dessert and wine, as well as having the option to participate in a silent auction or buy film canisters filled with prizes in the “Canister Caper” game.

“When the Oscar show actually starts, it comes on five projection big screens,” Berryman said. “People are at a table and they feel like they are at the Oscars.”

Berryman said Arts and Oscars is a large fundraiser for the non-profit.

“This is our second biggest fundraiser, we’re hoping to get $15,000,” Berryman said. “That’s a lot of artists teaching a lot of kids. That’s a lot of musicians going to nursing homes. That’s a lot more exhibits in our galleries.”

Berryman said hosting an event that incorporates appreciation for the visual art of film is just as important as appreciating other artistic media such as music, theater, dance and literature.

“It’s an extension of all of those arts,” Berryman said. “Film is art, it’s the creative process.”

Tickets for Arts and Oscars cost $95 a person or $730 for a table of eight. Tickets can be purchased by calling 359-2787, and although Berryman suggests people call to buy tickets in advance, she said a limited number of tickets will be available at the door Sunday.

“I know we’re in a tough economy but sometimes you need to reward yourself,” Berryman said. “This event is fun and uplifting.”

Plus, Berryman asked, how often do you get to walk a red carpet in Reno?

“It’s a really great excuse to take out that dress you bought for Christmas or New Year’s,” Berryman said, adding that men can wear a suit, rent a tux or dust off the one that’s been hanging in the closet.
