With the holidays right around the corner, theres no better way to spend the season than with a furry friend. The Nevada Humane Society is asking for your help in finding homes for 1,200 dogs and cats during the Home 4 the Holidays Pet Adoption drive. Starting today and running through through Jan. 1 you can come out to multiple events and adopt a pet.

“The holidays are about sharing time with those closest to us and for many of us who love animals, this includes the four-legged family members,” said Kimberly Chandler, communications manager for the Nevada Humane Society.

Home 4 the Holidays is a nationwide pet adoption drive and has been going on for the past 15 years. The Humane Society hopes families join in on the fun during Home 4 the Holidays and mark their calendars for the family fun events. Local residents are encouraged to go and all of the proceeds will benefit a homeless pet. The events will be taking place at the Nevada Humane Society shelter on Longley Lane in Reno.

On Saturday, there will be an Arts and Crafts Fair, featuring handcrafted art, jewelry, pet-related gifts and more. Admission is free, but if a craft is purchased, all proceeds will benefit a pet in need. The event is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On Dec. 7, there will be a Lights of Love Tree Lighting Ceremony, featuring children from the Suzuki Music Association of Reno/Tahoe performing traditional holiday carols. This is the first time this event is being done, it kicks of at 4:30 p.m. admission is free.

December 14, is Cupcake Day and kids will be able to take photos with Santa paws. This event features cupcakes, hand baked by volunteers and local bakeries. Guests can sample the cupcakes for a small donation. This is a pet-friendly event, so families can bring their four-legged friends and have their photo taken with Santa Paws too. The event starts at 10 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m.

“Home 4 the Holidays is the perfect way to remind everyone that there are many wonderful pets in shelters, longing for a home of their own for the holidays,” said Chandler.

Adoption fees for Home 4 the Holidays are $40 for adult dogs and $40 for kittens. All dogs and cats are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. Chandler said the upcoming events are all great and might just make your holidays all that more rewarding.

The Nevada Humane Society is open for adoptions 7 days a week — excluding Thanksgiving and Christmas day — from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. For more information, visit www.nevadahumanesociety.org.
