The holidays are fast approaching. That means traditional treats and favorites like candy canes, pumpkin pie and egg nog for your guests. For anyone looking to purchase drink mixes for holiday parties but is also hoping to buy local, you’re in luck. Sparks’ Mt. Rose Premium Cocktail Mixes delivers tasty cocktail concoctions for affordable prices.

Mt. Rose falls under Damon Industries, a company that had produced and bottled juices in Sparks since 1977 when Douglas Damon took over the company from his father. The Damon label celebrates 50 years in business this year. Douglas, along with his children; Josh, Aaron and Tiffany, run Damon Industries. Josh and Aaron are proud to be fifth-generation Nevadans. They grew up in the Sparks area and attended the University of Nevada, Reno.

“I grew up working in the family business,” said Josh, owner of Mt. Rose Cocktail Mixes. “This is how I got my baseball card money when I was in sixth grade. I was mopping floors, making boxes. Juice runs through my veins.”

In 2008, while working in the test kitchen, Josh didn’t think the current market had any decent cocktail or smoothie mixes. He thought about creating the perfect cocktail mix. He created the Mt. Rose Premium Cocktail Mixes label, naming it after the mountain.

“We designed these mixes for spirits,” said Josh. “It’s the best mix possible. Mt. Rose’s quality is so good and people love it.”

Restaurants and bars all over the Truckee Meadows use Mt. Rose products; from Bourbon Square Casino, which Mt. Rose created a new specialty mix for with its Hurricane drink, to the local chefs, who use the strawberry daiquiri blend to drizzle on cheesecake.

Josh said his mixes contain no high fructose corn syrup.

“We try to add as much fruit puree and natural flavors as possible,” said Josh. “We try to keep it as clean as possible.”

Mt. Rose is turning out special flavors for the upcoming holiday season.

“My favorite is the hot buttered rum mix,” said Josh. “The egg nog is non-dairy, which is good. If you add some of the pumpkin spice mix to coffee, it tastes like a latte from Starbucks. Or add the mix to some pancake batter. That’s really good, too.”

The bottles have drink and food recipes printed on the label. Josh and his staff have tested each recipe out and assure customers that the recipes are delicious. Creating the best product is their motivation and guarantee. The Damons are also passionate about donating their service to the community.

“We always try to help as much as we can,” said Josh.

The Damons work with the Washoe County School District and the Boys and Girls of Truckee Meadows, providing youth with healthier drink options, like juice and smoothies instead of soda and energy drinks.

“It’s healthy and cost effective,” said Josh. “We’re a big supporter of charities and fundraisers.”

Juices and other ingredients come in large barrels. Once these barrels are empty, they are donated to North Valleys High School’s art program where students paint nature-inspired scenery on the barrels. The City of Reno uses these barrels as trash cans at local parks.

The community has shown their support with the Damons. The family is grateful and is always looking to pay it forward.

“One hundred percent of the money stays here,” said Josh. “We have 30 employees here and we encourage them to support local business, who will in turn support our business. It’s a never-ending cycle and works better for everyone.”

The Damons also cater drinks at events like the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off and Hot August Nights.

“Our dad still knows people. This is a strong community,” said Aaron Damon, chief operating officer at Damon Industries. “We’ve been here for a long time. We’re not a faceless business. When you grow up working in a place like this, people get to know each other.”

“We love it when the community supports us because we support our community,” said Josh.

Mt. Rose Products are also found in Costcos and Scolaris in Sparks, Reno, Carson City and Lake Tahoe. Most 32 oz. bottles of a Mt. Rose product cost $5.99. Flavors vary from traditional margarita and bloody mary flavors to the more exotic blueberry lemon drop.

I love the pumpkin spice in pancake batter. My kids go crazy for it.

Mt Rose is the best mixers I have ever tasted. Thank you to the entire Damon family for their creations.

I'm a big fan of Mt Rose! I usually buy it at Total Wine in Reno and it's $4.50. I didn't know about the holiday flavors and I can't wait to try them! I usually get the margarita mix which is super tasty.

Thanks for the great article! I love knowing about local businesses so I can support them!
