The individual, a 38-year-old male, initially reported to University Police Services officers that he had been confronted and shot while walking through campus. The investigation and subsequent statements by the victim have revealed that the shooting was self-inflicted and accidental.
At 8:14 p.m., university officers responded to the area south of the Sarah H. Fleischmann Building near Ninth Street. At that time the individual provided a general description of the purported shooter.
“We are relieved to see this case resolved,” said University Police Chief Adam Garcia. “This isolated incident had no connection to the university other than the location."
Garcia said the man reported that he was taking a shortcut through campus when the incident occurred, but he could give no detail about who the man was or why he had a gun.
The individual remains hospitalized. University police are reviewing possible charges with the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office.
