SPARKS — Police arrested a man on Monday for practicing cosmetic surgery in his home without a license, a felony in the state of Nevada.

Edgar Orozco-Abundis admitted that he performed medical procedures on friends and family, according to Sparks police officials.

Authorities were alerted to the malpractice on Aug. 8 when Jean Petrel, a victim in the case, reported that he had contracted Orozco-Abundis to perform an undisclosed cosmetic surgery on Petrel’s wife for $2,000.

At a later date, Orozco-Abundis is said to have borrowed money from Petrel.

On June 22, Orozco-Abundis performed a

cosmetic surgery on Petrel, not his wife, inside Petrel’s home. The procedure was accepted as partial repayment for the medical deposit and loan that Petrel had given to Orozco-Abundis.

At the beginning of August, Petrel had not received the rest of the money owed to him. He then contacted local agencies about filing reports for the lost money and to report that the suspect was performing surgeries without proper licensing.

The case for the lost money was investigated by the Sparks Police Department and the investigation into the medical procedures was reported to the Attorney General’s Office. Prior to the Sparks Police Department making contact with the suspect, Petrel received payment for his monetary loss and agreed to accept more money from Orozco-Abundis, effectively closing this aspect of the case.

Last week, authorities at the Attorney General’s Office, the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office and the Sparks Police Department agreed that SPD would investigate the case and the district attorney would take jurisdiction.

On Monday, SPD detectives contacted Orozco-Abundis and arrested him for practicing medicine without a license. His residence was searched and no additional evidence was found.
