Reno led 6-5 through seven frames, but reliever Jason Urquidez forced home the tying run in the bottom of the eighth with a base on balls. With Rafael Rodriguez on the mound in the home half of the ninth, two walks, a wild pitch and an intentional walk loaded the bases and set the stage for a Chris Woodward sacrifice fly that chased home Brett Lawrie with the game-winning run.
Peña ended a brief home run drought with his eighth and ninth homers of the season—a three-run shot in the first and a two-run blast in the third. The second homer put Reno ahead 5-1, but the 51s would outscore the Aces 6-1 the rest of the way to even the series and the third chapter of the Silver State Diamond Challenge at a game apiece.
Cole Gillespie, Brandon Allen and Sean Burroughs joined Peña with two hits on the night.
Aces starter Matt Torra allowed five runs on six hits over six innings of work. The loss fell to Rodriguez (0-3), who surrendered the game winner without allowing a hit.
Tuesday’s victory went to 51s reliever Danny Farquhar (1-0), who worked a perfect ninth.
The Aces and 51s will hit the third leg of this four-game set on Wednesday night at Cashman Field. RHP Micah Owings (3-0, 3.68 ERA) gets the nod for Reno, and Las Vegas will counter with LHP Brad Mills (1-2, 2.18 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PT, and the action can be heard live on Fox Sports 630 AM in Reno or online at www.RenoAces.com.
Reno returns home on Tuesday, May 10, for an eight-game homestand against the Omaha Storm Chasers and Iowa Cubs.
