Questioner: “Where should they go?”
Thomas: “Poland, Germany and America.”
Her answer might have been impolitic but she was speaking a metaphorical truth. The problem in the Middle East is Israel, always has been Israel and always will be Israel.
The founding of Israel in 1948 was one of the greatest blunders in history.
It outranks the U.S. folly in Vietnam, the stupidity of U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the madness of Napoleon and Hitler marching on Moscow and the senseless slaughter of British and French soldiers at the Somme in 1916.
Israel has no moral, ethical or legal reason to exist. But it was founded because of the West’s guilt-complex over the Holocaust. Nevertheless, Israel is a fait accompli.
What can be done is for the outraged international community to clamp sanctions on Israel. No rogue nation is more deserving. (Investment sanctions against South Africa helped end apartheid.)
The crimes of the Israel are vast.
The latest outrage, the deadly Israeli raid on the humanitarian Gaza flotilla, is egregious. The ships were in international waters, the surviving passengers were taken to Israel against their will. And the ships were carrying 10,000 tons of relief supplies—not weapons and explosives.
As Wilmer Leon wrote in online Truthout:
“Taking a ship in international waters is piracy. Taking people against their will is kidnapping. Killing unarmed people without provocation is murder.”
It is impossible to turn such nefarious deeds into anti-Semitism or Israeli hatred. They are contemptible assaults.
Resort to force is nothing new for Israel. It has caused Palestinians thousands of deaths, great suffering and immense anguish. It has hurled destruction on Palestinians in the bogus name of national security.
Israel has engaged in criminal onslaughts in Gaza. Israeli-armed might has destroyed or damaged mosques, hospitals, schools, factories, police stations, a prison, parliament and ministries.
Israel illegally blockades Gaza, the world’s largest prison. Israel has invaded Lebanon three times. Israel occupies the Golan Heights, territory that belongs to Syria.
Israel, with the backing of the United States, invaded Gaza in 2008. The Israelis killed 1,400 and wounded 5,300. They devastated agricultural and industrial infrastructure.
Eduardo Galeano has written in Progressive the horrible truth:
“Since 1948 Palestinians have lived condemned to perpetual humiliation. They have lost their country, their land, their water and their freedom. Israel is a country that never complies with U.N. resolutions, never abides by international courts and mocks international law.”
Professor Marilyn Waring of Auckland University in New Zealand quotes a Palestinian as having told her: “We live in an environment unfit for human beings. I have been humiliated all my life, robbed of my dignity.”
The International Court of Justice ruled that construction of a wall in Palestine violated international law. Israel asks: So? Rulings do not apply to Israel.
Israel is dealing out the same destruction, persecution, ghettoization and discrimination Jews have suffered for centuries.
Moreover, Israel has no intention of reaching an agreement with Palestine. It continues to build settlements in the West Bank, an unconscionable crime. America’s “special relationship” with Israel supports this colonialization.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asks in effect: “What are you going to do about it?”
Nothing. America will not withhold even a dollar of its annual $3 billion gift to Israel.
Congress and the biased media support Israeli inhumanity. The powerful Jewish lobby suffocates reason. (President Truman, counter to the advice of his State Department, recognized Israel out of a cynical desire to reap votes. But he came to resent Israel’s hubris and the brutality of its ethnic cleansing of Arabs.)
Excuses are made for every Israeli crime. But unless President Obama does something other than admonish Israel, the outrages will continue ad infinitum.
Palestinian state? Why bother if Israel insists that such a state be demilitarized, be without control of its borders or airspace that Jerusalem remain under Israeli control and that Palestinian refugees not be allowed to return to Israel.
Zionism is racism. It was created solely for Jews. Zionism was branded as racist by the U.N. General Assembly in 1975.
When Israel was created 700,000 Palestinians were forced from their land, a catastrophe the Arabs call Nakba.
Israel is judge, jury and executioner of Palestinians. Arab hatred of the Jews is palpable—and justified.
Yet to many Jews and too many Americans, Israel is an exceptional nation embued with the biblical notion that they are “God’s chosen people.”
Jeffrey Blankfort, reviewing a book for CounterPunch, calls Israeli exceptionalism exemptionalism. Israel is exempt from the rules of international law and decent human behavior.
