RENO — The Hug High School ROTC Rifle Team was chosen over dozens of schools, nationwide, to receive a $10,000 endowment grant through a partnership between the Midway USA Foundation and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF).

The endowment will generate about $500 per year in perpetuity. The team may use the funds for ammunition, targets or any equipment needed for shooting sports programs.

“This is excellent,” said Major Michael J. Blackburn. “This will be a good source of money for our team. It will definitely come in handy, because right now we’re using old equipment. This will help us replace some of the old stuff.”

Endowments are generated through support from the Midway USA Foundation and local fundraisers hosted by RMEF. RMEF staff and volunteers nominate organized shooting teams, including high school, college and university shooting programs as candidates for future gifts. New endowments are awarded quarterly.

This year the Hug High ROTC program has 300 students enrolled, half of which are freshmen. About 20 students try out for the rifle team each year. Eventually 12 team members will represent Hug High ROTC in competition with other area ROTC and scholastic shooting programs.

“We’re a growing team,” Blackburn said. “With this help from Midway USA and RMEF; we might have a real shot this year.”
