Are you almost done with your holiday shopping? Those who attended the Taste of Home Expo (THE) Saturday at John Ascuaga’s Nugget were able to test and purchase locally made products at affordable prices. Those with VIP ticket access received a culinary education from one of the Wisconsin-based Taste of Home chefs.

The expo was divided into two parts. One was a free exhibition where local vendors sold their wares. From skin care to Tupperware, shoppers could question local merchants about the quality of their products and sample some of the goods. At selected booths, participants were able to sign up for each vendor’s individual raffle where they could win prizes like a free day spa package and bundt cakes.

Participants received cooking tips and deals as they walked around to each booth. They were also handed free tote bags that contained coupons, samples and a digital subscription to Taste of Home magazine.

“This is a great thing to bring to the community,” said Beth Cooney, a Sparks vendor, selling her hand-made glass pieces. Cooney makes holiday ornaments, bowls, coasters and other glassware in her garage.

“I sketch out the design first,” said Cooney. “Then, I fire each piece twice in the kiln.”

Cooney sells her work at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno. She also does two home showcase shows a year, including Power of the Purse, an event sponsored by the Nevada Women’s Fund on Nov. 22.

“Doing this is a creative outlet,” said Cooney. “I do what I love and sell the things that I love.”

After the exhibition, THE offered those with VIP access a cooking class with culinary specialist, Kristi Larson, one of the contracted chefs from the Taste of Home website.

The second part of the expo involved VIP participants. who were able to sit in the front row of Larson’s demonstration and were given the Taste of Home’s cookbook, “Recipes Across America.” VIP participants were also treated to their own private culinary samples of hors d’oeuvres and wine, provided by the Nugget.
