For those who love to watch a grind-it-out, defensive game, Friday’s Northern 4A regional semifinal game between Galena and Reno was right up their alley.

The Galena girls overcame a poor shooting night to edge the Reno Huskies 36-34 in the postseason basketball battle at Damonte Ranch High School.

Galena's all-state senior Emily Burns, who has already signed to play her college hoops for Nevada, was the biggest victim of the shooter’s curse. She put up 20 shots but managed to make only four of those. She finished with 10 points.

“I thought Emily had a good game,”ß veteran Galena coach Karen Friel said. “We had to have other girls step up and they did.”

There was a reason for the low score. Both teams were using a zone defense that wreaked havoc against each other.

“Both teams played great defense, “Friel said. “We had to find a way to score a few points here and there. You’re not going to go on a 10-0 run in a game like this.”

Reno held the lead throughout much of the game but lost it in the fourth. Reno's largest lead was at 23-14 with 4:10 left in the third.

Galena’s Taylor Schaller, who finished with 11 points, pulled the Grizzlies to within 27-26 by sinking her second 3-pointer of the third quarter. Grizzlies junior McKenzie Wasley powered in a layup to give her team the lead at 28-27. The Huskies took back the lead with a 3-point play by junior Shannon Gough. Her 12 points paced Reno.

Schaller quickly responded by hitting another trey from the top of the key to put her team up for good at 31-30 with 3:05 left in the game.

The Grizzlies eventually extended their edge to 36-30 with just over a minute to go, but there was still drama. Galena players had three separate chances to put the game away at the free-throw line but they missed every shot.

The Huskies (21-4) then got a chance to tie the game in the waning seconds but freshman center Morgan McGwire missed an open layup.

Galena (22-5) will advance to face the Reed and its undefeated record in the regional final today in Carson City. Tip-off is 4 p.m.
