EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon State Police say several 1,000-lb. hay bales that fell from a tractor-trailer rig traveling southeast of Eugene demolished the cab of an oncoming commercial truck, killing a 37-year-old Sparks, Nev., driver.

Killed early Thursday on Oregon Highway 58 west of Oakridge was Gregory Ralph Muller. Sgt. Andy Kenyon says Muller was transporting clothes and furniture for Sherwin-Williams Co. His rig came to rest in a ditch along the eastbound side of the highway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The westbound hay truck did not stop. Late Thursday, Oregon State Police said they have tentatively identified the driver and vehicle believed to have been involved. They say the investigation is continuing. The crash closed the highway for nearly five hours.
