Domestic violence suspect badly burned

RENO — A man being investigated on a domestic violence call barricaded himself in an apartment Sunday, threatened police and was then burned when the apartment caught fire.

The unidentified man is in critical condition after the incident at the Riverwood Apartments at 755 Kuenzli St. Police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance and after meeting with the victim, officers attempted to meet with suspect at his apartment. The suspect barricaded himself inside the apartment and made several threats to shoot police. While negotiating with the suspect, smoke began to billow from the residence which quickly became engulfed in flames.

Officers evacuated tenants from the three-story building while maintaining a perimeter around the suspect, who remained barricaded inside of his apartment. The suspect soon emerged from his balcony and was taken into custody without incident. He sustained third-degree burns and has been transported to an out-of-state burn center where he is currently listed in critical condition.

Based on the severity of the suspect’s injuries, his identity is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin.

The victim received only minor injuries as a result of the domestic battery.

The investigation is ongoing and the Reno Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance.
