In a game that featured 21 runs and 32 hits, the Aces came out on top, moving to 3-0 all-time on Father’s Day.
Offense prevailed early for both clubs, as Reno scored three in the first and added single tallies in the third and fourth frames. Las Vegas, though, touched-up the scoreboard in each of the first four frames, taking an 8-5 lead through four. Reno drew to within two at 9-7 through seven innings, before the Aces tacked-on five in the eighth to build a lead they wouldn’t let slip away.
Cowgill — the Pacific Coast League’s hit leader — led the way for Reno with four hits, four RBIs and a run scored. Cole Gillespie added a three-hit effort, while Evan Frey drove in two and Brandon Allen drew three walks.
Aces starter Matt Torra did not figure into the decision, allowing eight earned runs on 14 hits over 4.0 innings of work. From there, four Aces relievers held the 51s to just a run on three hits over the game’s final five frames. Jeff Bennett (1-0) earned his first victory with the Aces, despite allowing a run in the seventh. Yhency Brazoban dealt a perfect ninth to pick up the save—his first with Reno and second overall of the season.
The loss fell to 51s reliever Rommie Lewis (1-3), who was responsible for all five Reno runs in the fifth.
The Aces and 51s complete the series Monday night at Cashman Field. RHP Gaby Hernandez (1-0, 3.60 ERA) gets the nod for Reno, while Las Vegas will counter with RHP Scott Richmond (4-4, 6.21 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PT, and all the action can be heard live in Northern Nevada on Fox Sports Radio 630 AM or online at RenoAces.com.
First-place Reno returns to Aces Ballpark on Tuesday, June 21, for a four-game series against Las Vegas.
