SPARKS — Instead of looking for sweethearts Thursday at a speed dating event held at John Ascuaga’s Nugget ballroom Thursday, this group of men and women with phone numbers and cards in hand were looking for sweet deals.

Small businesses and contractors were given 10 minutes of “face time” with several government contracting officers and prime contractors by the state’s new Office of Economic Development in an effort to get funding for projects, connections or possible leads.

Kathy Agee-Dow, procurement outreach program director for the state office, was in charge of the clock. After each short session, she gave attendees the notice when it was time to move on announced over the intercom.

Instead of listing their interests and favorite music likes and dislikes, those who chatted pitched their specific specialties in hopes of finding golden opportunities.

“Source Connection” was a free opportunity for small businesses from all over the region to liaison with other small-businesses, government contracting officers, prime contractors, federal agencies and several other companies, including Arcadis/Malcolm Pirnie; The Army Corps of Engineers - New Orleans, Sacramento and San Francisco; AMEC; Bauer Foundation Corporation; Ardno Entriz; CH2M Hill; Defense Logistics Agency - Energy; Harper Construction; Manson Construction; MWH Americas; Nevada Department of Transportation; NV Energy; Nova Group, Inc.; Parsons Brinckerhoff; Regional Transportation Commission - Washoe; Southwest Gas; State of Nevada - Purchasing; USDA Natural REsources and Conservation; U.S. District Courts - Reno; and others.

The event was held during two sessions from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m.
