NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. (AP) — The Air Force says local and military authorities are investigating the discovery of human remains in a remote desert area at Nellis Air Force Base.

A statement issued Friday by the base says the remains were found adjacent to federal land around Sunrise Mountain in the northeast portion of the sprawling military base.

Air Force, Las Vegas police and Clark County coroner's officials were investigating, and the area was cordoned off.

Police said they were called about 8:30 a.m. Friday. Nellis is about 10 miles north of downtown Las Vegas.

Officials said the remains were decomposed and the identity and gender of the person were not immediately clear.
