Tom Layne scattered just two runs on three hits over seven innings of work, and the Aces offense backed up his effort with four runs in the fourth and insurance runs in the fifth and seventh innings. In the eighth, though, Kam Mickolio came on and surrendered five runs on three hits and three walks, as the Sky Sox collected the win and a 3-1 series victory.
Mickolio (0-2) took the loss, while Sky Sox reliever Edgmer Escalona (2-1) earned the win after pitching a scoreless eighth. Jim Miller worked a perfect ninth to slam the door on his eighth save.
At the plate for Reno, Lucas May led the way with two hits and two RBIs. Evan Frey recorded three hits, while Tony Abreu and Kyle Greene chipped in two hits apiece.
The first-place Aces now return home to kick-off a four-game set against the Tucson Padres at Aces Ballpark. In today’s opener, LHP Zach Kroenke (4-0, 5.64 ERA) toes the slab for Reno, while Tucson counters with LHP Wade LeBlanc (5-1, 5.24 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PT.
