The Ascuaga family, which included founder John, Chief Executive Officer Michonne and Chief Operating Officer Stephen, joined several employees and long-time friends in the Casino Cabaret where a celebratory champagne toast highlighted the night. Plenty of mingling, and snacking on complimentary dessert, ensued following the toast, which allowed for some catching up with the Nugget’s extended family.
“We are very fortunate we have a lot of friends,” Michonne said after the cake cutting. “When you are in business this long, you kind of develop roots and so a lot of that is shown here to today.”
Michonne said the history of the Nugget from its humble days as a coffee shop, and even as a single-tower hotel, have come a long way in the city of Sparks. She said the legacy that has been built over time is nowhere near complete, but the evolution that has occurred brings her great pride to be the head of the company.
“It’s a great feeling and wonderful to have all of our employees here and we are looking forward to many good years to come,” she said.
The Nugget has been in business in Sparks since 1955 and now comes complete with 1,600 rooms, eight award-winning restaurants, 110,000 square feet of meeting space, a year-round atrium pool and 1,200 slot machines.
Currently, the Nugget is preparing for a busy summer schedule that includes the 25th anniversary of the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off, the Star Spangled Sparks Fourth of July event and much more. Michonne said the summer will be an exciting time for the Nugget and one she is personally looking forward to.
“I think today is a glorious day, Spring is on its way, and when we get into summer, we have great summer events coming again. We are looking forward to good business coming through,” she said. “We have always got plans to improve things and always adding things so stay tuned. We are really looking forward to summer coming.”
