SPARKS — In a joint regional effort, law enforcement made 12 arrests for DUI out of 114 traffic stops over the Nevada Day weekend.

The Sparks and Reno police, Nevada Highway Patrol, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office and University of Nevada, Reno police DUI enforcement campaign also netted 65 speeding citations, 16 suspended or revoked driver’s license citations, 29 citations for no insurance, 55 miscellaneous traffic citations, one reckless driving citation and 18 warnings.

All of the local agencies added officers to the streets to conduct DUI saturation patrols looking for impaired drivers. The additional officers were funded by grants that were provided to the agencies by the Department of Public Safety’s Office of Traffic Safety.

In 2009, 68 people were killed in Nevada traffic crashes that involved at least one driver or motorcycle rider with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher. In the city of Sparks, there have been four fatal traffic crashes reported in 2011, three of which involved alcohol.
