Music director Laura Jackson and the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra welcome Davidson Fellow Reylon Yount on Yangqin for Classix Two.
The concert will feature the Suite from Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring, Huang’s Spirit of the Yellow Earth-Concerto for Yangqin and Orchestra, and Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 12 op. 112 “The Year of 1917.”
“This is a concert that brings together three distinctly different pieces related in some way to Nationalism,” said Laura Jackson. Appalachian Spring is one of Copland’s best known American pieces, and it has become associated with the sounds of America and the Appalachians. Classix Two will mark the U.S. premiere of Spirit of the Yellow Earth, a piece written by guest soloist Reylon Yount’s teacher inBeijing. Yount will perform on the Yangqin, a Chinese dulcimer. Rounding out the show will be the gigantic and dramatic Symphony No. 12 by Russian composer Shostakovich. Symphony No. 12 serves as something of a biography to Vladimir Lenin.
