The grand opening of northern Nevada’s first IMAX theater created quite a buzz early Wednesday morning in Sparks as movie goers anxiously gathered in the lobby awaiting the midnight showing of RoboCop at the new Galaxy Luxury+ Theater at Legends.

The theater is Galaxy Theaters’ fourth Nevada location and 13th overall location, spanning California, Washington and Texas. The location at Legends is only the third Luxury+ location (Henderson, N. Las Vegas) which features leather power-reclining seats with swingside eating trays, beer and wine availability, reserved seating at no extra cost, digital sound and projection, 11 large screens and one three story tall IMAX screen.

Galaxy Theaters President Rafe Cohen was on site about 10 hours before Wednesday’s midnight showing as construction crews put the finishing touches on the exterior signage and technical workers ironed out any kinks in projection and sound. Cohen said the theater had hosted charity events on Sunday and Tuesday for the Boys and Girls Club of the Truckee Meadows and for Michael Landsberry’s family. He said the reaction from guests was as expected.

“People are absolutely thrilled,” Cohen said. “The response we have gotten from the community has been outstanding. Everybody’s been really excited and pumped up about this, and when they come in and see it, you can see it starting to take shape in their minds what the theater will offer.”

Other than a few exterior lighting additions happening next week, and a few movie poster cases needing installment, Cohen said the theater is finished and it has been fully operational for customers since late last week. After breaking ground on the project eight months ago, the $14 million project has moved forward nicely, according to Cohen.

“If you had come in a week ago you would have said, ‘they are never going to be ready,’” he said. “It certainly causes us some stress too but we are happy we did make it and we had a couple of great events.”

Cohen said employees throughout Legends were able to come in for a free popcorn and soda last week and the same opportunity is available to the public throughout the weekend with the purchase of any ticket online or at the box office. The new Luxury+ theaters have reserved, assigned seating in every theater and Cohen said the adult evening price of $10 is the same as its major competitor Cinemark.

Cohen said many of Legends’ shops and eateries are excited about the movie theater opening to generate more business and window shopping in the outlet mall, and Cohen has already spoken to local charities, City of Sparks officials and local Rotary Clubs to ensure the business interacts in the community. He said Galaxy Theaters is “no stranger to smaller communities” with theaters in Porterville and Tulare, Calif. and he hopes to be as involved in the community as possible.

“We practice community involvement and that’s why the first thing we did was hold the charity events,” Cohen said, adding that the company works with Boys and Girls Clubs whenever possible in the cities it has theaters. “The sum of anything should be about more than just the bits and pieces, it needs heart and soul. We like to try and deliver and do that.

“We joined The Chamber, our managers will be Rotarians out here. We have to be part of the community. It is not one of those things where you blow into town, sell five condos and leave. We are here for the long haul.”

The new Galaxy Theater will be showing several Oscar-nominated films during the first couple weeks of its operation and will incorporate new films as they become available. Tickets and showtimes are available online at www.galaxytheaters.com/luxuryplus-sparks.
