"It was my mother's dream of owning a thrift store," said Terrilyn, owner of Timeless Fashion. "I always adored fashion. I used to shop at a consignment shop at 15th and Prater years ago. I used that as inspiration. My concept for the store is a place where a mother, a daughter and granddaughter can come in and shop together."
Unlike a normal thrift store where the public drops off their gently used clothing, Timeless Fashion works with its consignees — women who sell their high-end clothing — in order to sell merchandise. Consignees bring their clothes into the shop, where Terrilyn and her staff help decide the selling price of each garment. Terrilyn sells the clothing item in her shop and when it sells, the shop keeps 65 percent of the selling price and gives 35 percent to the consignee.
Terrilyn focuses on finding unique pieces from different eras to sell in her shop.
"Some fashions are timeless like a Jackie O suit or a little black dress," said Terrilyn. "Those things never go out of style. We have things that you can't find at the mall or at Ross. If you're at a party wearing one of our dresses, you probably won't see another girl with your same outfit on."
She also sells old favorites from the past that stores no longer sell.
"Say that you like the way a pair of pants from Ralph Lauren's green label fit you," said Terrilyn. "That label is five years old and probably won't be in most stores. You can come in here and find that pair of pants."
Sometimes, an outfit needs one particular piece to complete the ensemble. Terrilyn guarantees she has that special piece you're looking for.
"We have some really great things here," she said. "Faux fur shawls, California causal-business wear … We have an unusual assortment of things."
Prices range from low to moderately high. Terrilyn offers sizes from zero to 6x. She specializes in garments for plus-sized women, something other local shops do not do. Terrilyn does this as she understands the difficulty plus-sized women have finding quality clothes. She was once a plus-sized woman herself. Eleven years ago, Terrilyn was obese. She had gastric bypass surgery and has kept the weight off since.
"Plus-sized women can some in and find some great-fitting pieces," said Terrilyn. "If a woman looks in the mirror and likes what she sees, it makes them happy. I know know how to dress plus-sized women; what clothing looks best on their body type, clothes that fit well and make a woman feel beautiful. We are a store for real people."
The shop is driven by the efforts of the volunteers, customers who spent their time helping women pick out and try on clothes.
Timeless Fashion offers a VIP Club for customers, where those who hand out Timeless Fashion Business cards could receive a 15 percent discount on the entire store.
"When I receive 10 business cards back, I will host a private party for the customer who can shop the entire store," said Terrilyn. "It's a pretty good bargain."
The beginning of the new year marks wedding gown season and Timeless Fashion offers dresses of various designs, strapless, full ball gown, etc.
"I believe that there is something for everyone then," she said. "We're different than the other consignment store in town. We offer different clothes and have a different look and feel. We dance to the beat of our own drummer."
Timeless Fashion is located at 554 E. Prater Way at McCarran Boulevard.
