Along with Reed and Reno, Bishop Manogue is one of the elite girls basketball teams in the North.

Spanish Springs ran into the Miner buzz-saw Saturday afternoon and was stuck with a 51-30 home loss.

The Cougars fell to 12-5, 4-5 in league games while the Sierra League-leading Miners improved to 13-3, 9-1 in league meetings.

“We got outworked and they were a little more physical than we were,” Spanish Springs coach Art Cardenas said. “They executed better than we did and they attacked the basket better than we did.

“Defensively, I thought it could have been better and it should have been better.”

Led by Breezy Holt, who scored a game-high 15 points, Bishop Manogue led 35-20 at the half and never saw its lead shrink below 17 after scoring the first bucket of the second half.

“She (Holt) is (tough). She attacks the basket strong and if not she is cutting without the ball,” Cardenas said.

Katie Turner joined Holt in double digits, finishing with 10 points.

Adriana Pennington led the Cougars with nine points. Hannah Woytek (eight points) was the only other Coug to score more than four points.

Spanish Springs outscored Bishop Manogue 6-0 in the fourth quarter before McKenzie Hamlin hit a layup with six seconds left.

Saturday’s loss came on the heels of a 60-32 home win over North Valleys and Cardenas could not deny he thought it impacted his group’s performance against the Miners.

“It is (tough) when you have two different styles,” Cardenas said. “Last night we played a team that goes mostly zone. Tonight we played a team that (puts) full-court pressure on you.”

Cadenas said his team needs to work on its defensive intensity after allowing 35 first-half points in Saturday’s loss.

Spanish Springs, which has alternated a win and a loss its last six games, will hope to push that streak to seven, Tuesday, at Galena. Tip is at 5:15 p.m.
