Saturday’s North Region Cross Country Championships at Reno’s Rancho San Rafael Regional Park proved to be tough for Sparks cross country teams as none of the Reed, Spanish Springs or Sparks High cross country teams qualified for the upcoming state meet.

The top three boys and girls teams in each NIAA classification advance to the state championships.

In the DI ranks, the Reed boys finished fifth and the girls finished ninth. The Spanish Springs boys and girls teams both finished eighth. In the DI-A ranks, the Sparks boys (two racers) and girls (one racer) did not field enough racers to compete in the team standings.

In the boys and girls Div. I and Div. I-A Regional Races, the top five finishers not on state-qualifying teams advance to the state.

In the boys Div. I race, Reed’s Anthony Ocegueda qualified for the state meet, finishing fourth with a time of 17:14. His RHS teammate, Benjamin Stevens, will join him at state, finishing 10th overall with a time of 17:35. Spanish Springs’ Travis Heitzenrader also qualified for the state race, finishing seventh with a time of 17:28.

None of the Reed or Spanish Springs girls qualified for the state tournament but Ashley DeLong led the Cougars, finishing 27th with a time of 22:36 and Reed’s Rebecca Wilson led the Raiders, finishing 37th with a time of 23:23.

In the Div. I-A boys, Scott Wages led the Railroaders with a time of 22:36. Rhianne Kennedy was the only Sparks racer and finished the 5K race in 26 minutes and 27 seconds.

Galena won the DI boys race with its top five finishers turning in a combined time of 1:27:30, fives seconds ahead of McQueen and 21 seconds ahead of Douglas, all of which qualified for the state tournament.

McQueen’s Kai Benedict won the individual race with a time of 16:24, 39 seconds of ahead of Galena’s Mason Labadie, who finished second.

On the girls side, Douglas claimed the team regional title with a total time of 1:44:28. Carson finished second, three minutes and seven seconds behind the Tigers and Galena grabbed the final state berth with a time of 1:50:02.

Lindsey Adams of Douglas won the individual regional title with a time of 19:33, five seconds ahead Reno’s Kyra Hunsberger.

After hosting the North Region Cross Country Championships last Saturday, Rancho San Rafael Park will host the State Cross Country Championships Saturday. The Div. I-A boys start at 10:40 a.m. followed by the Div. I boys at 11:20 a.m. The gun for the Div. I-A girls goes off at 1:15 p.m. with the Div. I girls to follow 45 minutes later.
