A broken sprinkler and resulting flooding of hallways prompted the Washoe County School District (WCSD) to cancel classes at Spanish Springs High School Friday.

Evacuation measures and safety procedures were followed, and all students and staff members left the building shortly after 8 a.m.

“Emergency management procedures were followed well,” said Chief Mike Mieras of the WCSD School Police Department. “We received great cooperation from our students and great support from our staff members at the school. We’d like to thank our regional agencies—the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District, and the Consolidated Bomb Squad—for their assistance in the incident."

School Police officers are investigating how the sprinkler head was broken. Cleanup was scheduled at Spanish Springs High School over the weekend and games and other events took place as scheduled Friday and Saturday.

Classes will resume on Monday morning, Sept. 16.
